In 1990 Junghans was successful at advancing the miniaturization of radio-controlled technology and integrating it into a wristwatch. The “Mega 1” was the world’s first digital radio-controlled wristwatch. It was developed in collaboration with FR OG Design and distinguished itself with advanced technology and highly futuristic design.

In 1993, solar cells were the source of energy for the Mega Solar. Then came many breakthroughs in quick succession. In 1994 antenna were successfully integrated in a non-metallic casing and then a year later, Junghans brought together radio-controlled solar technology with high-tech ceramic material. In 1999 the Junghans technicians succeeded at bypassing the Faraday cage, building a radio-controlled movement with integrated antenna into a metal case.

In the meantime, time-signal transmitters were emerging in Japan and North America as well. However, they transmit at different frequencies than the European DCF77 time signal transmitter and make use of another time telegram protocol. The vision of a watch that could receive all these transmitters and automatically adjust while traveling across time zones was fulfilled in 2004 with the multi-frequency radio-controlled movement developed by Junghans. In 2011 Junghans made yet another key step in watch development targeting unrivaled precision and independence from energy sources. For the first time ever, Junghans brings together its own multi-frequency technology with environmentally friendly solar energy in a considerably slimmer movement.
